Statewide initiative to target reduction of littering, high cleanup costs – An estimated 500 million pieces of litter are scattered along Pennsylvania roads and 96% of Pa. residents surveyed say littering is a problem across the state. Harrisburg, Pa. – “Pennsylvania has a littering problem,” according to DEP Secretary Patrick McDonnell. “Trash lines many of our roads and neighborhood streets. Hillsides and streambanks are strewn with tires and other garbage illegally dumped. This presents health hazards, it contaminates the soil and water, and cleaning it up is costly to the Commonwealth and taxpayers.”
