Reading Eagle -Volunteers from nonprofits We Agape You Inc. and Reading Beautification joined Wednesday to clear litter on North Fourth Street between Washington and Buttonwood streets.“Today’s cleanup with Reading Beautification was part of our mission of beautifying neighborhoods and in furtherance of our work in rehabilitating houses,” said the Rev. Randolph Simmons, founder of the organization that helps provide employment and housing services to homeless veterans.
Simmons said the project is part of a larger effort to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus by cleaning and disinfecting city streets and sidewalks.
Future cleanups are planned for parts of Schuylkill Avenue and Windsor, Weiser, Walnut, Franklin and South Sixth streets.
The crew of volunteers, which included some veterans and residents of the Hope Rescue Mission, a men’s shelter at 645 N. Sixth St., started their work at 8 a.m. and ended with a lunch provided by the city’s Public Works Department.
