Combating environmental racism, one neighborhood cleanup at a time

Pittsburgh Post Gazette – A Ciroc vodka bottle embedded in the dirt. A sad single multicolored sock. Remnants of what appeared to be a bed wrapped around a tree root. Those were just some of the more notable items found on the hillsides near the corner of Point View and Arbor streets in the city’s Lincoln-Lemington neighborhood on a rainy, humid morning in early April. About a dozen volunteers with Allegheny CleanWays, a nonprofit dedicated to eliminating litter and dumping in Allegheny County, woke up early on a Sunday to perform the back-breaking task of removing trash from the area and filling a dumpster that was nearly overflowing after only an hour.
