International coastal cleanup begins Sept. 1

The Daily Item – The International Coastal Cleanup, the world’s largest volunteer effort aimed at improving the health of our oceans, begins on Sept. 1. This global initiative aims to prevent trash from entering our waterways. Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful coordinates the effort in Pennsylvania. “We invite individuals, families, friends, civic groups, organizations and businesses to join hundreds of thousands of volunteers from around the world to pick up trash before it reaches our waterways. Last year 14,000 volunteers from 39 counties improved their communities by removing more than 864,000 pounds of trash and debris from Pennsylvania’s lands, waterways and coastal regions during the International Coastal Cleanup event,” said Shannon Reiter, president of Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful. “We would like to see all 67 counties participate in the event this year.”
